Volunteer Engagement Manager

The Volunteer Engagement Manager is part of the Community Engagement team and works closely with internal UWABC teams, and school and community partners. The Volunteer Engagement Manager should enjoy volunteer and project management, balancing relationship-building with managing details and collaborating internally and externally while holding true to UWABC’s long-term strategic vision.

Position responsible forthe management and implementation of various volunteer engagement projects that support United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County goals and support volunteer recruitment of United for Youth and community school strategy partners. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Develop and implement volunteer recruitment and stewardship efforts aligned with the volunteer engagement strategy

  • With the input of the Volunteer Engagement Director, develop and execute comprehensive volunteer recruitment strategies to attract individuals and groups aligned with UWABC’s engagement goals
  • Within brand standards and in collaboration with the Marketing and Communications Department, create compelling volunteer recruitment materials and online content, to effectively and consistently communicate volunteer opportunities and benefits
  • Serve as a liaison between volunteers and staff members to facilitate communication, address concerns, and resolve issues in a timely and professional manner
  • Effectively communicate position requirements, onboarding and training processes, and scheduling considerations to volunteers and internal/external volunteer supervisors
  • Deliver presentations in the community to raise awareness about volunteer opportunities, share the organization's mission and impact, and inspire individuals to get involved in meaningful ways
  • Daily management of volunteer database, data entry, and website maintenance.

Lead and implement volunteer communications strategies with support from MarCom

  • With Marketing and Communications, utilize various channels, such as social media, community outreach, and volunteer database, to actively promote volunteer opportunities and increase engagement in alignment with the volunteer engagement strategy 
  • Coordinate with the Marketing and Communications department regarding communication strategies for different audiences and opportunities to segment the volunteer base and target specific asks to individuals

Manage and maintain Get Connected Platform

  • Manage Get Connected volunteer database including data entry and clean-up based on established processes and protocols, website maintenance, development/management of custom pages, and general site support
  • Utilize the full potential of the Hands On website to engage, manage, and communicate with volunteers

Lead and implement signature volunteer events 

  • Project management and planning for the Back to School Supply Drive
  • Project management and planning for volunteers at signature events
  • Project management and planning for any other days of service developed by the organization
  • Coordinate portable/remote volunteer projects
  • Support Volunteer Engagement Director with Business United projects as needed and as time allows

Support internal and U4Y partners with volunteer engagement best practices

  • Support internal and external partners with volunteer engagement best practices
  • Stay informed about industry trends, best practices, and innovative approaches in volunteer management and apply relevant insights to enhance volunteer engagement strategies
  • Support new and existing partner agencies with onboarding and training on the Hands On website/database and listing opportunities accurately
  • Ensure the partner has signed the partnership agreement prior to listing opportunities with Hands On and partner contacts remain current

Lead internal volunteer administration, including onboarding, training, recognition

  • Manage the internal volunteer program including co-developing position descriptions with UWABC staff, recruiting/screening volunteers, providing organization orientation sessions, developing/maintaining relationships with volunteers to enhance engagement and retention

Other Related Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate volunteer appreciation events, recognition programs, and ongoing stewardship activities to acknowledge the contributions of volunteers and cultivate a sense of belonging and satisfaction
  • Deliver volunteer experiences that are embedded with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion considerations and strategies in all aspects of volunteerism with emphasis on youth, diverse and community-based audiences
  • Organize and inventory the supplies in the shed storage area

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in social services, nonprofit management, communications, or related fields and 2 years of experience in volunteer coordination, marketing, fundraising, or similar fields or equivalent experience 
  • 1 year or more of experience in supervising volunteers
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed 
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills in English (verbal and written
  • Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets insurance requirements and access to reliable transportation
  • Commitment to the mission and guiding principles of UWABC and the ability to model those principles

Technical Skills, Abilities, and other Requirements

  • Proficient with software, including Google Suite, Microsoft Office, Zoom (or similar programs) 
  • Ability to learn and use a variety of other platforms (e.g.Airtable, Asana, Get Connected))
  • Previous public speaking experience 
  • Previous data management experience 
  • Ability to work and build relationships with diverse staff, volunteers, community members, governments, philanthropic organizations, donors, community partners and corporate partners
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish fact,s and draw conclusions
  • Experience managing a variety of projects simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and in teams
  • Ability to manage sensitive situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy
  • Ability to balance priorities to accomplish assigned tasks within the required time frame and be able to shift quickly between several tasks without loss of continuity 
  • Holds self and other team members accountable for achieving results
  • Effective problem-solver with strong initiative

This position is exempt from overtime regulations. Hybrid work environment: a mix of office, remote, and community settings.  As part of our hybrid work policy, new employees are required to work from the UWABC office a minimum of 3 days per week for the first 90 days and then, the schedule can be modified based upon conversation with the supervisor.

Hours: 40/week.  

Salary and Benefits: $45,900 to $51,070  plus full benefits, including: paid vacation, sick and personal leave; employer contributions to 401(k), contributions to health, dental and vision insurance benefits, life and disability insurance, employee assistance program, lifestyle spending account, and coaching and support.
