In studies by Harvard University and University of California-Berkley, Durham and Wake counties rank in the lowest 6% of counties in the country in upward mobility. A child of color or low income has a better chance of getting ahead in Queens or Oakland than in Raleigh or Durham. Why? Many organizations are working on obvious intentional racism and classism causes, such as redlining, slavery, and voter suppression.
