SECU Family House provides a safe, nurturing, affordable home for patients and their loved ones who travel great distances to UNC Hospitals for life-saving procedures and serious illnesses. We provide guests lodging, meals, supportive programs, transportation, and a caring support network. We serve families from all 100 North Carolina counties and beyond, helping them rest, heal, and gather strength when they need it most.
The 75-guestroom facility creates a comfortable, inviting, family-like environment to help families feel at home and foster a strong community. The Family House Volunteer Program is a critical part of the network of support for families in residence at SECU Family House.
Position Summary: The Volunteer Services Assistant supports all activities of the Volunteer Services Department and coordinates the Family House Meal Program, which brings volunteer groups to the House to provide meals for our guests. The Volunteer Services Assistant must be a people person, an efficient organizer, effective communicator, and a gracious and astute problem-solver.
The Volunteer Services Assistant typically works 15 hours per week, including occasional evening or weekend hours to support meal groups and special events at the house. Scheduling is flexible and will be coordinated in advance with the Director of Volunteer Services.
Essential Functions
Coordination
- Assisting the Volunteer Services Director with screening volunteer applications, interviewing candidates, recommending volunteer placements
- Assisting with scheduling and registration in VolunteerHub
- Working with meal groups for meal coverage on a weekly basis
- Prepare necessary supplies for meal providers beforehand
- Helping to troubleshoot volunteer scheduling issues
- Assisting in scheduling orientation and tours for prospective volunteers
- Assisting with orientation process and curriculum prep
- Staying updated with VolunteerHub training and support
- Supporting the Volunteer Services Director in making sure volunteers have needed resources
Communication
- Maintaining communication with meal provider volunteers on a regular basis
- Greeting, hosting, and assisting meal providers as needed, including weeknights and occasional weekends
- Assisting with in-house marketing for meals, activities, and announcements
- Assisting with the development of important updates and announcements
- Generating meal program-related content for social media accounts and Family House publications (impact report, brochures, videos)
- Monitoring the Family House website and other marketing materials related to Volunteer Services to ensure they are accurate and consistent and updated regularly
- Ensuring a monthly thank you email to meal teams
Additional Responsibilities
- Provide support to Volunteer Services Director during National Volunteer Week
- Support the planning and implementation of the annual Volunteer Appreciation Event (s)
- Assist in managing the volunteer database (VolunteerHub)
- Assist in tracking, auditing and reporting volunteer service hours
- Provide support for Family House special events
- Support Director of Volunteer Services with special projects as needed
- Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by actively engaging with volunteers from diverse backgrounds, ensuring equal opportunities for participation, and fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.
- Contribute to program evaluation activities designed to continuously solicit volunteer feedback including but not limited to:
- Quarterly Town Hall meetings
- Annual Volunteer Satisfaction Survey
Education Required
High school diploma, or equivalent; bachelor's degree preferred
Skills and Abilities

Hiring range between $19.80 - $21.40/hour ($15,400 - $16,600 annually)
