Advocacy is using your voice to influence public policy and systems change. Civic engagement is taking action to improve your community through voting, organizing, educating, and participating in democratic processes.

Together, they are not just right, they are responsibilities for nonprofits in service of the public good. As pressure mounts to silence nonprofit voices, it's critical we equip ourselves with the knowledge and courage to act.

Here are strategies, tools, and resources to help you engage legally, boldly, and confidently.

Know What Advocacy Is
Advocacy includes educating the public, engaging decision-makers, and taking positions on issues – not endorsing candidates or political parties.

Tie Your Message to Your Mission
Your advocacy is strongest when it reflects your core values and the communities you serve. Connect the dots between your mission and the issues you speak on.

Understand Your Legal Rights
Yes, 501(c)(3) nonprofits can engage in advocacy and even limited lobbying, as long as you stay nonpartisan and compliant.

Nonpartisan ≠ Neutral
Nonprofits are allowed – and often expected – to speak up about injustice, systemic inequities, or harmful legislation. Staying silent is also a political choice.

Prepare Internally: Create a Rapid Response Plan
Have a go-to plan when your organization needs to act or respond publicly.

Promote Civic Engagement
Encourage voter participation, distribute nonpartisan ballot information, and help your community understand the stakes.

Don’t Go It Alone
Join advocacy coalitions, policy networks, and statewide nonprofit associations. Collective voice = collective power and protection.

Advocacy and civic engagement are integral to our work. When we speak up and show up, we advance justice, protect our missions, and build stronger, more equitable communities.
