Guidelines for Content Submissions

The North Carolina Center for Nonprofits (the Center) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that educates, connects, and advocates for North Carolina nonprofits. Our vision a North Carolina where nonprofits are intentional in their commitment to holistically build healthy, equitable organizations, and center racial equity to strengthen communities is central to our work with and for nonprofits and the nonprofit sector.

We post resources and articles that highlight, support, and inform nonprofit trends and best practices. We invite contributors who understand nonprofits and share the Center’s mission, vision, and values.

Content

Submissions should align with or address one or more of the 12 principles in the Center’s Principles & Practices: Best Practices for North Carolina Nonprofits: Advocacy and Civic Engagement; Board Governance; Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion; Financial Management; Fundraising; Human Resources; Information and Technology; Legal Compliance and Transparency; Partnerships and Collaboration; Program Design, Management, and Evaluation; Strategic Communication; and Strategic Planning.

Blog. Content should cover topics and experiences that relate to the nonprofit best practices outlined in Principles & Practices. Blog posts may be highlighted on our social media and in our monthly Nonprofit Connections e-newsletter. Many Center blog posts are between 800 and 1,200 words in length, but the Center will consider blog posts that are longer or shorter than this typical range.

Resource Library. Content should cover in-depth a specific topic that relates to a nonprofit best practice outlined in Principles & Practices. Relevant graphics/infographics (1-2), with citations, may be included. Articles may be highlighted in our monthly Nonprofit Connections e-newsletter. Resource Library articles vary between 800 and 3,000 words in length, but we will consider submissions that are longer or shorter than this typical range.

Style

The Center seeks to provide original content for our nonprofit audience in the authentic voices of contributors. The Center uses Associated Press (AP) Stylebook for content (www.apstylebook.com, or follow on Twitter @APStylebook) and encourages contributors to consider writing in this style if it matches their authentic voice. Additionally, the Center requests that contributors follow these guidelines:

  1. Use size 11 type and a Word-supported program. Do not use colored type.
  2. Graphics/images should be at least 96 DPI in .jpg or .png format, with a minimum 600px width/height. All graphics should have accurate citations. Graphics should be sent as attachments, not in the body of text.
  3. Be aware of voice (I, we, me, you, etc.). Avoid using industry jargon unless it is relevant to the story and is included with sufficient explanation (refer to AP Stylebook for tips).
  4. All articles should be sent as attachments, not in the body of an email.

Compensation

The Center does not compensate contributors. However, we will share submissions through our member communications and our social media.

Selection Considerations

The Center is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion. It is through this lens that we select and share resources and content.

We place a priority on submissions that avoid self-promotion, selling of products, or excessive promotion of one organization.

We place a priority on submissions from current affiliates of the Center, such as a nonprofit member, statewide partner, funder, or sponsor.

The Center reserves the right to decline submissions that do no align with the outlined values and criteria.

Rights

The Center acquires these rights:

  1. The right to refer to the article and its author together with relevant biographical information, and to re-publish all or part of the article for the promotion of the Center.
  2. The right to continue to publish the article on its website and distribute it electronically through an archive, and at its sole discretion.

In the case of any subsequent publication of the article – electronic, print, or other media – the author agrees to ensure that the Center is appropriately credited as the original source of publication. Appropriate forms of crediting include written mention of the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits’ name and website address (www.ncnonprofits.org).

All copy submitted to the Center must complete our editing process. Copy may be edited for reasons including but not limited to accuracy, tone, taste, grammar, or writing style. The article may be altered and updated following fact-checking procedures. Copy may need to be shortened due to space limitations. Center editors have the final decision for making changes, additions, or deletions to copy but will work with authors to ensure that the final product is consistent with their intended message and voice.

Warranty

By submitting an article or blog post, the author warrants that it is an original work and does not infringe upon the copyrights of others. The Center reserves the right to remove any blog posts or articles that include infringing materials and to pursue legal action against contributors in the event that their works include infringing materials.
