Controller

Help strengthen the financial foundation that supports meaningful change across North Carolina. The North Carolina Partnership for Children is seeking a collaborative, forward-thinking Controller to lead complex nonprofit accounting operations, drive continuous improvement, present financial results and analysis, and support our statewide mission.

The Controller serves as the senior accounting leader, responsible for managing a small team maintaining reliable financial records, audit readiness, effective internal controls, and practical system improvements. This role provides leadership and mentorship to accounting staff while fostering a culture of excellence and accountability in governmental accounting standards. In collaboration with the CFO, the role presents financial results and analyses to management, executive team members, the NCPC Board and its committees, and other key stakeholders and will be expected to act on behalf of the CFO when called upon.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting leader who thrives in a mission-driven environment, enjoys coaching, developing staff, and collaborating internally to improve and present financial reporting. The Controller will bring expertise in accounting systems and has experience working with government contracting and fund accounting. 

Responsibilities include: 

• Manager the day-to-day controllership accounting functions to ensure the accuracy of financial records and reporting, including month-end and year-end processes. 
• Lead and direct daily accounting operations and maintain the integrity of the GL, COA, fund structure, reconciliations, and accounting records.
• Strengthen audit readiness, internal controls, documentation, and compliance with nonprofit, grant-funded, state and federal reporting requirements.
• Oversee banking, cash management, ACH, AP, payroll accounting, and related transaction-cycle controls.
• Serve as the operational owner for MIP Fund Accounting and related financial systems including reporting, access controls, workflow improvements, and system documentation.
• Supervise, coach, and cross-train accounting staff while building sustainable procedures and quality-control routines. 
• Partner with the CFO and internal stakeholders to improve financial reporting to key stakeholders, streamline processes, standardize procedures, and reduce key-person dependencies. 

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field; CPA, MBA, or equivalent advanced credential strongly preferred.
• Seven+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including GL ownership, audit support, and staff supervision.
• Hands-on experience with MIP Fund Accounting, Abila/Momentive, or comparable nonprofit  / fund accounting systems, and Microix or similar purchasing/AP/expense reporting systems.
