Larry King’s Clubhouse (the “Center”) provides high‑quality, drop‑in childcare for children ages six weeks to 12 years whose families are conducting business at the courthouse. The Center ensures children have a safe, developmentally appropriate, and nurturing environment during what can often be stressful moments for their families. The Executive Director plays a critical leadership role in ensuring the success, sustainability, and strategic direction of this essential community program.

 

Position Summary

The Executive Director (“ED”) is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, and management of the Center. This includes ensuring high‑quality childcare programming, strong fiscal stewardship, effective staff leadership, compliance with state and accreditation standards, strong relationships with the Board of Directors, and collaboration with community and justice system partners.

The ED supervises a team of four full‑time teaching staff and ensures that the Center is welcoming, safe, and enriching for all children and families served.

 

Key Responsibilities

Board Relations

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to ensure the organization fulfills its mission.
  • Keep the Board regularly informed on the organization’s financial status and operational conditions.
  • Partner with the Budget Committee to develop and oversee the annual operating budget.
  • Collaborate with the Board to set fundraising priorities and support grant activities, special events, and other development opportunities.

Administrative Leadership

  • Administer all aspects of a high‑quality drop‑in childcare program serving children ages six weeks to 12 years.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with the Office of the Trial Court Administrator to ensure smooth operational coordination.
  • Foster meaningful relationships with all court officials to ensure the Center is responsive to their needs and there is a shared commitment to its ongoing operations. 
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and voluntary accreditation requirements.
  • Oversee child enrollment processes and ensure complete, accurate record‑keeping.
  • Collect and report evaluative data to inform program improvement and accountability.
  • Oversee payroll processing and payment of invoices in accordance with organizational financial policies.
  • Maintain accurate and complete financial records.

Programmatic Leadership

  • Lead the development and implementation of developmentally‑appropriate curricula and activities.
  • Ensure appropriate use and management of program materials and resources.
  • Conduct informal screenings and identify when families may benefit from external community referrals.
  • Provide requested resource and service referrals to families.

Financial Management

  • Operate the Center in a fiscally responsible manner.
  • Support efforts to secure additional funding, including grants and donor engagement.
  • Advise the Board on current and projected financial needs.
  • Participate in annual budget development.

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Hire and onboard qualified teaching staff.
  • Supervise and provide leadership to four full‑time employees.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, identify training needs, and support staff development.
  • Hold regular staff meetings and ensure strong internal communication.

Professional Growth

  • Remain informed of trends and best practices in early care and education, family support, staff development, and nonprofit management.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and ensure staff have access to growth opportunities.
 

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, child development, social work, or a related field.
  • Minimum four years of combined experience working in a licensed childcare facility as a lead teacher and/or administrative experience qualifying toward NC’s Level III Childcare Administrator requirements.
  • Minimum two years of verifiable administrative experience in a group childcare setting.
  • Experience in nonprofit operations, including staff supervision and Board collaboration.
  • Working knowledge of nonprofit fiscal management, including basic accounting and budgeting.
  • Strong understanding of child development principles.
  • Experience working with children and families at risk.
  • Ability to meet NC Division of Child Development and Early Education (DCDEE) requirements for Level III Childcare Administrator.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to obtain a Child Care Criminal Background Check Qualification Letter.
Salary and Benefits

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $50,000 - $60,000.
  • Benefits: Participation in a comprehensive benefits program that includes medical, dental, vision, short-term disability, and life insurance. Eligible for paid holidays and paid time off with vacation accrual based on years of service. A Safe Harbor 401(k) retirement plan. Either paid parking or a local monthly transit pass.
