Summary of position

The FHCNC is a full-service fair housing organization solely dedicated to eliminating housing discrimination in North Carolina starting in Winston-Salem. Its staff will take complaints from people who believe they have been the victim of housing discrimination and will perform fair housing tests and investigations to determine if there is evidence of discrimination. In addition, FHCCM staff will survey the housing market to determine how housing discrimination is preventing people from living in the communities of their choice. Staff will also counsel homeseekers, housing providers, federal, state, and local government officials, and members of the public on their fair housing rights and responsibilities. Finally, FHCNC staff will enforce the fair housing laws by working with attorneys who will bring actions against housing providers who violate the fair housing laws.

Qualifications

Required

  • Demonstrated commitment to civil rights and housing justice;
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or 8 years of relevant experience; 
  • 3 – 5 years’ experience in a supervisory role at a non-profit agency;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to share information clearly, concisely, and effectively;
  • Superior organizing skills and leadership; 
  • Fundraising experience, including grant research and writing, donor cultivation, and managing relationships with philanthropic funders;
  • Ability to access, read, analyze documents, federal and state fair housing statutes and regulations, and court cases. 
  • Ability to read and analyze financial reports. 
  • Must be able to write monthly/quarterly reports, business correspondence and other organization materials. 
  • Ability to present information clearly and effectively and respond to inquiries and commentary from the Board of Directors, housing advocacy and consumer groups, housing industry organizations, members of the public and private sector, and the public.

Preferred

  • Advanced degree in law, social work, or relevant field & work experience; 
  • Experience in housing and/or civil rights;
  • Clear understanding of and ability to adapt to North Carolina and Winston-Salem’s cultural and political landscape;
  • Track record of developing and implementing equitable solutions to problems faced by historically marginalized communities;
  • Commitment to creating organizational culture aligned with civil rights and social justice advocacy. 

Compensation and benefits

Salary: $80,000 – $100,000/year DOE for 40 hour per week schedule.

Role and Responsibilities of the Executive Director

Administration:

  • Work with the Board of Directors to establish current and long-range objectives, plans, and policies.
  • Advise, guide, and direct the implementation of plans and procedures consistent with established policies and Board approval.
  • Oversee the adequacy and soundness of the organization’s financial structure.
  • Hire, assist in training, and supervise all staff.
  • Establish and maintain an effective system of communication throughout the organization.
  • Schedule and participate in staff meetings, attend all the organization’s Board of Directors meetings, and perform tasks related to the smooth running of the organization.
  • Participate in staff training to ensure maximum efficiency and accuracy of work. Participate in cross-training within the organization to promote teamwork and provide necessary back-up for each position.
  • Maintain records related to client services, activities, and data necessary for reports to governmental agencies.

Staff Supervision/Fair housing work: 

  • Manage a complex workload including overseeing office administration, enforcement case management, public relations, and education/outreach campaign.
  • Assure leadership in a manner that demonstrates a commitment to the needs and concerns of those protected from discrimination by local, state, and federal fair housing laws.
  • Represent the organization to government agencies, major donors, the financial community, and the public.
  • Work with staff to organize a public education campaign to promote awareness of the fair housing laws and remedies to gain support for the new organization.
  • Establish working relationships with other fair housing agencies, local housing advocacy and consumers groups and other nonprofit and community-based organizations.
  • Seek opportunities for media coverage of fair housing and the organization’s services.
  • Maintain a high level of credibility with the public and private sector and the public.

Grant management/Resource Development: 

  • Work with the National Fair Housing Alliance and its staff to ensure that all benchmarks and grant requirements are met for the HUD grant which funds the organization.
  • Explore and coordinate all possibilities for new sources of funding, including fund raising, trainings, advertising, and other appropriate activities.
