Who we are looking for: Legal Aid seeks a full-time Medicaid Appeals Technical Team (MATT) Project Director to serve as an organizational leader responsible for the overall management of a statewide project focused on Medicaid appeals and public benefits. 

Why this role matters: This role provides strategic leadership to ensure the delivery of high-quality legal services while expanding LANC’s statewide impact in public benefits advocacy. The Project Director will play a critical role in strengthening legal advocacy for Medicaid clients and enhancing organizational effectiveness.

What you will do: The Project Director will:

  • Provide direct legal services to clients, primarily in public benefits, including Medicaid
  • Supervise legal and support staff assigned to the project
  • Recruit, hire, and onboard new team members
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and professional development opportunities
  • Conduct performance evaluations, identifying strengths and areas for growth 
  • Foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive work culture
  • Ensure staff uphold professionalism, dignity, and respect in all interactions
  • Provide leadership and oversight for the NCMedHelp project, an independent hub for Medicaid triage, data collection, and systemic trend monitoring, in collaboration with the Charlotte Center for Legal Advocacy and Pisgah Legal Services.
  • Actively collaborate with other nonprofit legal advocacy organizations across the State on public benefits training, outreach, education, systemic issue tracking, and litigation
  • Manage project grants, ensuring timely reporting and full compliance with funder requirements and LANC policies.

What you will bring to Legal Aid of North Carolina:

  • J.D. degree and admission to practice law in North Carolina
  • No pending North Carolina State Bar disciplinary proceedings
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income and underserved communities
  • Expertise in federal and state public benefits law, with a focus on Medicaid
  • Experience leading programs, projects, or statewide initiatives
  • Strong leadership skills, including staff supervision and development
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
  • Prior legal services experience preferred
  • Experience with grant-funded programs (compliance, reporting, budgeting) strongly preferred
