Who we are looking for: The Second Chance Wilmington branch of the Second Chance Project is seeking a full-time Paralegal. The ideal candidate is passionate about the Second Chance practice, is a creative problem solver and highly motivated. He or she will be experienced in the legal field, passionate about social justice, exhibit empathy and patience, and have the communication and organizational skills needed to work in a fast-paced legal environment. Paralegals serve as a primary point of contact for clients, offering empathetic and professional support throughout all stages of representation. The position requires the ability to communicate effectively with clients, multitask, and possibly handle a caseload of expunction and driver’s license restoration files.

Why this role matters: The work performed by the individual in this role will support Legal Aid attorneys and staff who devise strategies and pursue legal remedies to help clients obtain successful outcomes.

What you will do: 

  • Provide direct legal services, under the supervision of a licensed attorney, to clients in expunctions and driver’s license restoration.
  • Assist with outreach events.
  • Schedule client appointments.
  • Conduct client interviews in person and over the phone.
  • Determine client eligibility for services.
  • Maintain and organize client files, both electronic and physical, ensuring all case documentation is complete and up to date.
  • Ensure that compliance rules are followed and that files contain required documentation.
  • Draft correspondence and preparing legal documents and pleadings for attorney review.
  • Assist attorneys with case preparation, including legal research and document review.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

What you will bring to Legal Aid of North Carolina:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree from an accredited school.
  • No pending North Carolina State Paralegal disciplinary proceedings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent judgement and discretion.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Strong professional ethics.
  • A passion to serve low-income clients.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, high-volume team environment.
