Who we are looking for: The Staff Accountant provides essential support in executing accounting transactions, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and the effective stewardship of the organization’s financial resources. The individual in this role is required to have a high level of attention to detail, the ability to work independently with a sense of urgency, and the highest standards of integrity and accountability. The ideal candidate is a flexible, action-oriented self-starter who can adapt to changing priorities while delivering accurate and timely results.

Why this role matters: This role is critical to maintaining the integrity of financial records and supporting the organization’s overall financial operations, with responsibilities spanning accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit card administration, and other finance areas. 

What you will do: 

Employee Reimbursements & Credit Card Administration

  • Review and process employee expense reimbursements to ensure compliance with internal policies.
  • Verify documentation, account coding, and required approvals.
  • Reconcile corporate credit card activity and ensure timely submission of supporting documentation.

Accounts Receivable & Cash Management

  • Record accounts receivable transactions and apply incoming payments accurately. 
  • Prepare and reconcile bank deposits. 
  • Assist in monitoring outstanding receivables and maintaining accurate records.
  • Support documentation and tracking of cash receipts. 

Accounts Payable & Vendor Management 

  • Review, code, and process vendor invoices in accordance with organizational policies.
  • Prepare and execute payments via check and ACH.
  • Maintain accurate vendor records and oversee vendor management and maintenance.
  • Respond to vendor inquiries and resolve discrepancies. 
  • Assist with annual 1099 reporting and compliance requirements. 

General Accounting & Financial Support 

  • Prepare and post journal entries, including recurring and standard entries. 
  • Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations. 
  • Assist with general ledger account reconciliations. 
  • Support month-end and year-end closing procedures.
  • Maintain organized and audit-ready financial records.

Grants, Payroll & Treasury Support

  • Provide financial support to the Grants Management team.
  • Assist in the preparation of internal financial reports and supporting schedules.
  • Support annual audit preparation and external reporting requirements.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and enhancement of internal controls and financial procedures.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide support for budgeting activities and financial analysis as assigned.
  • Participate in finance department initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and accuracy.
  • Assist with special projects and perform other accounting-related duties as assigned.

What you will bring to Legal Aid of North Carolina:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • A commitment to the mission and values of Legal Aid of North Carolina.
  • Experience in non-profit or government funded organizations.
  • 2+ years of accounting experience (nonprofit experience preferred); or a combination of education and relevant work experience. 
  • Solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles; Government Accounting Standards (GAS) or other government regulations helpful.
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of accounting software programs.
  • Works well in a fast-paced, high-volume office environment.
  • Be able to exercise good judgment.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently, cooperatively, and professionally with team members.
  • Exhibits honesty, trustworthiness, and reliability, open to performance feedback.
  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
