Who we are looking for: Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) is seeking a full-time Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) Staff Attorney to support the delivery of high-quality legal services in public benefits. The Medical-Legal Partnership (MLP) Program trains medical provider partners in clinics across the state to identify their patients' legal needs and make referrals for legal support. The ideal candidate will have experience with Social Security, Medicaid, and related benefits programs, strong analytical and writing skills, and the ability to work effectively with medical partners, agency staff, and internal teams.
Why this role matters: This role plays a key part in supporting individuals navigating complex public benefits systems. The MLP Staff Attorney provides legal guidance, represents clients in administrative and appellate matters, and collaborates with medical partners to address legal issues that affect health outcomes. The work ensures consistent, accurate, and effective legal services within the MLP program and across the statewide public benefits practice.
What you will do: The Staff Attorney will:
- Provide direct service to clients under case supervision by Central Carolina office.
- Handle a broad variety of tasks to facilitate the mission of effective, high quality legal
services in the fields of public benefits and health law. - Primarily, the Staff Attorney will practice in the disciplines of Social Security Law
(SSDI/SSI/SSA Retirement), Medicaid, and health supporting nutrition benefits, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the Special Needs Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). - Devise strategies for resolving client legal matters.
- Represent clients in administrative hearings and appellate courts of review.
- Provide training for Thriving Hearts and other MLP partners on Public Benefits topics
under the supervision of the MLP Project Director. - Handle legal consults from Thriving Hearts medical professionals under the
supervision of the MLP Project Director. - Represent Legal Aid by engaging in the legal community.
- Have opportunities for participation in the North Carolina Bar Association and other
local bar associations. - Work with Legal Aid’s Public Benefits Practice Group and the MLP team to help
monitor public benefits trends across the State. - Coordinate with the MLP Project Director and Benefits Practice Group leadership to
provide information requested by funders.
What you will bring to Legal Aid of North Carolina:
- J.D. degree and admission to practice law in North Carolina
- No pending North Carolina State Bar disciplinary proceedings
- Experience in federal and state public benefits law
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational and time-management abilities
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Prior legal services experience
