Ivan Canada, who has led North Carolina for Community and Justice for almost 10 years, is leaving the Greensboro organization to become president and CEO of the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits.
Canada shared what he termed the "bittersweet news" with NCCJ supporters on Friday. He will leave NCCJ in mid-January 2024 to take the new role at the center for nonprofits.
"Deciding to leave NCCJ has been a difficult decision," he wrote in his letter to NCCJ supporters. "I’ve been a part of the organization in some fashion since Denny Kelly took me to lunch to ask me to join the board in 2009."
Canada joined NCCJ in 2014 as senior director for development, communication and strategic partnerships. He was promoted to executive director in 2015 a little more than a year after joining NCCJ.
"It’s hard to imagine NCCJ not being such an integral part of my life – especially my summers. While I will miss our supporters, Anytowners, staff, and board members dearly, this is also an exciting transition for both of us," said Canada, who was named one of TBJ's C-Suite Award winners in 2023. I am looking forward to the challenges of a new job in a statewide organization and continuing our work to make the nonprofit sector better and more equitable across North Carolina.
"For NCCJ, this transition is an opportunity to identify an executive director with the key experience and skills to build on our successes of the past eight years and launch NCCJ into its next stage of growth."
NCCJ Board Chair Jennifer Martineau, president and founder of Leap & Inspire Global, will lead the process of recruiting and selecting Canada's replacement.
The North Carolina Center for Nonprofits is based in Raleigh. Its mission is to educate, connect, and advocate for the state's nonprofits.
