Mission Statement: The Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center preserves and interprets the social, cultural, and natural history of the Swannanoa Valley, the pathway to western North Carolina, by developing programs and engaging exhibitions for the education and enrichment of the community, its children, and future generations.
Summary of Position: The Assistant Director of the Swannanoa Valley Museum & History Center reports to the Museum’s Executive Director. A successful Assistant Director will support Museum goals and objectives, manage supporting staff and volunteers, and promote the Museum throughout the Swannanoa Valley. Primary responsibilities include support of digital infrastructure and presence, volunteer and docent coordination, adult and educational programming, marketing, and collections oversight.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in the Museum’s office as well as in the community. Travel may be required for meetings, speaking engagements, workshops, professional associations, and other events. The position of Assistant Director is part-time on a somewhat flexible schedule, depending on events, etc.
Compensation: Starting at $19.25/hour for a desired 20 hours/week, depending on qualifications. Salary will be reassessed annually, dependent upon performance and budget.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in a related field such as history, heritage, museum management, education, or nonprofit/business administration
- Proficient in social media, computers, internet, and archival softwar
- Public speaking and the ability to represent the Museum in a professional manner in a public forum
- Human relations skills in working with staff, volunteers, board of directors, and the community
- Demonstrated creative and technical writing skills
- Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license and personal transportation
Job Segments:
Event Promotion & Digital Presence
- Full responsibility for setting up ticketed events on the website
- Managing the museum’s social media presence
- Creating regularly scheduled digital promotional posts
- Handling general museum correspondence
Volunteer & Docent Coordination
- Maintaining docent schedule (and acting as docent if shifts are empty)
- Managing archival researchers and volunteers
Adult & Educational Programming
- Coordinating specific annual events and fundraisers (e.g. Past & Present Lecture Series, Murder Mystery Event, Tea With A Twist)
- Maintaining upkeep and facilitation of educational “traveling trunks” for school groups and educational groups
- Giving guided museum tours and walking tours (as needed)
Marketing
- Writing press releases and designing flyers for scheduled events, as needed
- Submit Valley Rewinds to Black Mountain News on Wednesday of each week
- Facebook/Instagram posts and advertising
Collections
- Making sure accessioned objects are correctly entered into CatalogIt!
- Assign accessioning tasks to Archive Volunteer
