The Development Director, in collaboration with Equality NC Staff and Board, oversees and is responsible for all the organization’s fundraising activities and manages relationships with the organization’s financial partners. Duties include cultivating new, current, and former donors to encourage ongoing contributions, seeking out opportunities for financial support through grants and sponsorships, and planning fundraising events.
This is a primarily remote/home office role with time spent in-person at events and in-person meetings with other staff and stakeholders. Location may be anywhere in North Carolina.
ResponsibilitiesFundraising & Donor Relations
- Develop and execute the annual development plan, revenue strategy, and year-round fundraising calendar in collaboration with the Executive Director.
- In collaboration with Comms dept., develop strategy and creation of annual and seasonal fundraising campaigns, including creation of appeals, messaging, segmentation, and donor journeys.
- Cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors, corporate partners, and community stakeholders.
- Manage sponsorship outreach, fulfillment, and relationship growth.
- Represent Equality NC at funder-supported conferences, community events, and statewide engagement opportunities.
- Maintain and grow partnerships that advance Equality NC's mission and visibility.
Grant Writing & Funders
- Lead all grant writing, reporting, compliance, and funder communication.
- Maintain strong relationships with foundations, corporate funders, and institutional partners.
- Ensure compliance with all public support and third-party funding requirements (e.g., State Employees Campaign, Candid/GuideStar, workplace giving platforms).
Database & Revenue Management
- Oversee all aspects of donor database management, including data integrity, segmentation, performance troubleshooting, and reporting.
- Log and reconcile all sources of contributed income in coordination with Operations/Finance.
- Develop dashboards, reports, and analytics to support decision-making and track fundraising performance.
- Reconciliation of gift entry on a monthly basis
Events & Third-Party Fundraising
- Plan, manage, and execute all aspects of the annual gala and major fundraising events.
- Provide support, logistics, and promotional coordination for all third-party fundraising events.
- Collaborate with community partners to expand event-based fundraising opportunities.
Communications, Appeals & Campaign Strategy
- Develop all fundraising appeals, campaign collateral, and donor-facing materials in partnership with the Communications Department.
- Build and manage year-round fundraising campaigns, including email series, direct mail, social media integrations, and donor stewardship touchpoints.
- Coordinate development-related messaging, scheduling, and campaign timelines across teams.
- Ensure consistent, mission-aligned storytelling and donor engagement using best practices in segmentation and donor psychology.
Organizational Leadership
- Serve as staff liaison to the Development Committee, providing updates, reports, and strategic recommendations.
- Contribute to organizational budgeting, forecasting, and long-term revenue planning.
- Maintain a strong understanding of nonprofit fundraising best practices, ethics, and compliance standards.
Compensation and Benefits
- The hiring salary for this position is $78,000
- Health (employer pays 80%), dental, vision, long-term disability, short-term disability, and life insurance employer pays (100%)
- Generous PTO and 15-16 paid holidays per year
Qualifications/Experience
- Five or more years of professional experience in nonprofit development required
- Experience working with or on behalf of LGBTQIA+ communities preferred
- Demonstrated success in grant writing, donor cultivation, and event management
- Strong proficiency with CRM/donor databases, data segmentation, and reporting
- Ability to manage statewide relationships and represent the organization at events
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently in a one-person development department while collaborating effectively across teams
- Experience managing or contributing to budgets over $1 million
