ADTS of Rockingham County is seeking an experience, strategic and mission-driven Director of Finance to provide financial leadership for the organization and help guide its continued growth and long-term sustainability.

This is an opportunity for an accomplished finance professional to serve as a trusted strategic partner to Executive Leadership, providing the financial insight, analysis, controls, and planning needed to make sound organizational decisions. The Director of Finance will have meaningful responsibility for the agency's financial infrastructure while also helping shape financial strategy, evaluate new opportunities, strengthen systems, and ensure responsible stewardship of organizational resources. The successful candidate will bring strong nonprofit finance and accounting expertise, exceptional judgment, integrity, and the ability to translate complex financial information into clear recommendations for leadership. This position is ideal for a finance professional who enjoys both the technical discipline of accounting and the broader challenge of using financial information to strengthen an organization.

Position Summary

The Director of Finance provides leadership and oversight for all facets of ADTS's financial operations and related administrative functions. The position is responsible for financial reporting, accounting operations, budgeting, forecasting, cash management, financial analysis, internal controls, compliance, risk management, and audit coordination. As a member of the Executive Management Team, the Director of Finance plays an important role in strategic planning, financial sustainability, program evaluation, organizational growth, and resource allocation. The Director works closely with the Executive Director, Executive Committee, Director of Human Resources, program leadership, funding sources, auditors, financial institutions, and other stakeholders. The Director will ensure that ADTS maintains a strong financial foundation, effective internal controls, reliable financial reporting, and sound financial practices. The position will also evaluate the financial implications of proposed programs, services, sites, contracts, and other organizational initiatives. This is a high-trust, professional-level exempt position requiring substantial initiative, independent judgment, discretion, and accountability. The successful candidate will be expected to identify opportunities for improvement, anticipate financial needs and risks, and proactively provide leadership with information and recommendations that support the agency's mission and strategic objectives.

What You Will Lead

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to the Executive Director, Executive Committee, and Executive Management Team.
  • Translate financial information into meaningful analysis, recommendations, and actionable insights for organizational decision-making.
  • Lead annual budgeting, financial forecasting, cash-flow planning, and long-range financial planning.
  • Evaluate the financial feasibility and potential impact of new programs, services, sites, contracts, funding opportunities, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Monitor organizational financial performance and proactively identify trends, opportunities, risks, and areas requiring corrective action.
  • Support leadership in making informed decisions regarding resource allocation, investments, operational priorities, and financial sustainability.

Accounting & Financial Operations

  • Provide oversight of daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash receipts, reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting.
  • Ensure financial transactions and reporting are accurate, timely, complete, and consistent with GAAP and applicable requirements.
  • Oversee financial statement preparation and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial results.
  • Monitor cash requirements and liquidity to ensure the organization can meet its financial obligations.
  • Oversee fixed assets, depreciation schedules, donations, grants, receivables, payables, and other financial activities.
  • Maintain effective financial systems and continuously identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and automation.

Grants, Compliance & Stewardship

  • Provide financial oversight of grants, reimbursements, funding sources, and restricted and unrestricted revenue.
  • Monitor compliance with applicable funding requirements, contracts, GAAP, FASB standards, IRS requirements, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain strong relationships with funding sources and provide appropriate financial information and support.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting associated with applicable federal, state, local, and other funding requirements.
  • Promote a culture of responsible financial stewardship and accountability throughout the organization.

Internal Controls, Risk & Audit

  • Develop, maintain, and continuously evaluate a strong internal control environment.
  • Establish appropriate financial policies, procedures, checks and balances, and segregation of duties.
  • Identify financial and operational risks and recommend practical strategies to mitigate those risks.
  • Lead the annual independent financial audit and serve as the primary agency contact for the external auditor.
  • Coordinate audit schedules, supporting documentation, financial records, and required information.
  • Ensure required financial filings and reporting are completed accurately and on time.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Supervise and support the Finance Administrator and other accounting personnel as assigned.
  • Establish clear expectations, provide coaching and professional development, and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Build a collaborative, accountable, and service-oriented finance function.
  • Partner effectively with leaders across the organization to strengthen financial understanding and decision-making.
  • Serve as a positive and credible representative of the Finance function and ADTS.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration with an accounting concentration, or related field.
  • CPA designation.
  • Graduate degree is a plus.
  • Nonprofit experience is highly preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of professional-level experience, ideally including leadership of finance and administrative functions within a nonprofit organization, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in nonprofit financial management, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, compliance, and resource management.
  • Experience with grants, reimbursement processes, and funding-source requirements is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing finance and accounting professionals.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks, Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, relational databases, and other financial and administrative technology.
