  • Creating Association ROI Through Volunteer Training: A Strategic Approach to Volunteer Training is a guide for nonprofit organizations to create or strengthen a volunteer program that "taps effectively into the diverse skills, knowledge and energy of your volunteers" by creating a learning journey for your volunteers. It covers:

  • Jeanne Tedrow, President & CEO, North Carolina Center for Nonprofits

“You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” –Winston Churchill

  • Successful Strategies for Recruiting, Training, and Utilizing Volunteers is a 64-page handbook covering all aspects of volunteer recruitment, management, and evaluation.

  • Tony Martignetti Nonprofit Radio - "Every nonprofit struggles with these issues. Big nonprofits hire experts. The other 95% listen to Tony Martignetti Nonprofit Radio. Trusted experts and leading thinkers join Tony each week to tackle the tough issues."

  • Nonprofit organizations must set clear rules and guidelines to ensure the safety and health of volunteers, employees, clients, and minors, as well as to protect company property. Depending on the nature of your nonprofit's work or mission area, you may need policies and procedure documents that vary on the scale of complexity. Below are example policies ranging from a few pages to full manuals.

  • CAPLP, a nonprofit in Minnesota, has a thorough Volunteer Handbook on which other nonprofits may wish to model their own guidelines and policies for volunteers. Appendices include sample forms for incidents such as standards of conduct for volunteers or reporting an injury, as well as sample exit interview questions.

    Topics covered include:

  • The NonProfit Voice podcast is "the go-to source for nonprofit management strategy and tactics. Developed for thought leaders and innovators, we cover topics like fundraising, donor management, human resources, board / volunteer management, and marketing technology."

  • State Liability Laws for Volunteers and Charitable Organizations: An Overview covers the general legal liability environment in the U.S. and has a section dedicated to North Carolina statutes protecting different types of volunteers and those pertaining to other organizational liabilities. (Nonprofit Risk Management Center, 2010)

  • "The Nonprofit Jenni Show is a podcast for nonprofit professionals, board members, and community leaders. Every week, Jenni (a charitable marketing coach) invites nonprofit leaders to share their stories and advice for facing common management, marketing, and development challenges."

  • Although referencing state laws outside of North Carolina, Securing Waivers of Liability from Volunteers of Nonprofit Organizations gives a solid overview of why nonprofits should obtain signed legal documents from volunteers during the on-boarding process and features a sample "Release and Waiver of Liability" template.
